- Beefalo
A beefalo is a mongrel beast, the result of crossbreeding domestic cattle( Bos taurus) with the American bison( Bison bison). This crossbreeding was originally done to combine the hardiness, adaptability, and slender meat of the bison with the milder disposition and high- yield meat product of cattle. Beefalo are generally larger than standard cattle and can thrive in a wider range of environmental conditions, making them particularly suited to areas with harsh rainfall or poor grazing conditions.
The idea of creating beefalo dates back to the 19th century, but it was n’t until the 1960s and 1970s that controlled parentage programs were developed to stabilize the mongrel’s characteristics. Some conservationists argue that beefalo pose a trouble to the bison population, lacing their inheritable diversity. Despite this, beefalo husbandry continues, particularly in the United States, where they’re raised for their meat and rigidity to colorful climates.
